What is the best shot you ever made, and we're not talking about alcohol?
The best shot could also be the luckiest shot, and it happened when I was 16 yrs. old hunting for Whitetail Deer. Having never shot a deer before, I used to laugh at stories about "buck fever" and never thought I would be a victim. Well, that quickly changed when that little Pennsylvania Whitetail walked within 40 yards of me. I started shaking so badly you could have misdiagnosed "buck fever" with extreme hypothermia! I fired and the deer ran off unscathed! I missed! I quickly jacked another shell into the gun of my Dad's hand-me-down .308 lever action, and the deer jumped across an embankment. I fired again and hit the deer in the head while it was midair! That was the first deer of my life. It's better to be lucky than it is to be good!
What is your history/heritage in the hunting/outdoor industry?
Long before I was old enough to carry a gun, I would hunt rabbits and pheasants with my dad, carrying a stick that I pretended was my gun. Also, too young to use real hooks, I would bend my mom's straight pins into the shape of a fish hook - it actually worked!
How would you define your perfect hunting day, from start to finish? Money's
no object. Where would you go, what would you take and what would you hunt?
The perfect hunting day I've been fortunate to have experienced several times. It happened when my son shot his first Mule Deer, his first Bull Elk with a bow, and twice more with two Pope and Young Antelope. I witnessed all of those, plus many more successful hunts. Nothing in the world can compare to watching your own kid getting his first animal. It's priceless!
For you, is it about the journey or the destination?
Ever notice on a tombstone, they put the date you were born and the date that you died? In between there is a dash between those dates and numbers. That dash represents the journey, and that's what life is all about because in the end; the destination is the same. I used to tell my students that I taught to have a great dash!
If you weren't a professional hunter/sportsman, what would you be doing?
I feel very fortunate to be living my dream. That dream started when I was teaching and has evolved into The Unstoppable You! program that I now share with students and staff at schools all across the U.S. To date, I have had the privilege of speaking to over 137,000 kids, and challenging them to make choices that will help make them Unstoppable!
What's the craziest thing you've ever done?
One day I asked a friend of mine, who was also a teacher, to go Pike fishing. He couldn't go because of other obligations. So, I went by myself and caught and released several Pike that day. I decided to bring one home for dinner. When I got home, my wife had a note on the door that she was over at my friend's house visiting his wife, and that I should come over. When I got over to their house, my friend was in the bathroom taking a shower. I could not resist... I took that 30 inch Northern Pike, that was still very much alive, and while my friend was singing away in the shower, I slipped it in the tub. That fish, sensing he was free, took off swimming, and my friend not knowing what the heck just came out of the drain, started screaming and eventually yelling, "I'm going to kill you!" It was hilarious!
Are you involved in any charitable organizations or causes?
My wife and I give 10% of the proceeds from the sale of my book, Unstoppable! to these different organizations:
Feed the Children, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, March of Dimes, Dr. Charles Stanley, In Touch, etc.
If you could play the leading role in any film, past or present, which film
would it be and why?
I would like to play the part of Kevin Costner in the movie Field of Dreams, so that I could talk with my Dad again, who passed away three years ago.
After so many years in the field, what is that keeps you going back?
I keep going back because hunting and fishing isn't something I do... It's who I am!
Is there a moment in history, a time, era that you are fascinated with? Why?
The World War II generation has been called the greatest generation. They lived through the Great Depression, went to war, and defeated Hitler, and came back and built the greatest country in the world. I totally respect that!
What are the life lessons you take away from hunting and apply every day?
That good things come to those that wait.... and wade!
What was the last big ticket techie item you purchased? Do you like it?
My laptop computer, since I don't even own a cell phone. It is the only techie item I've purchased. I like it because I got it for The Unstoppable You! presentations, and it has never let me down.
Tell us about your family and what they mean to you.
My wife is my heart, and my son is the soul of my being. Without them, I would be just the shell of a man. My wife's name is Vicki, and my son's name is Colton.
Can you recall the first time in your life that you truly understood what it
meant to be an American?
I was in the first or second grade and I was in the back seat of the car one night as my family was driving down our country road. A car flashed its headlights and asked my parents the location of one of our neighbor's houses. My parents gave this stranger the location of the house and the stranger drove off. It was at that point my mom started crying. She had correctly figured out the stranger was about to inform our neighbors that their son, Warren Moyer, was killed in Vietnam. He used to play baseball with us little kids, and promised he would again someday when he got back home. That's when I realized that freedom isn't free, my baseball buddy was the ultimate sacrifice.
Got any good jokes you can share with us? Keep 'em clean this time!
My best joke I played was on the entire town of Craig, CO. It was a fish story of unbelievable proportions. This fish story spread like wildfire after the picture appeared on the front page of The Daily Press. The newspaper reporter, who I told this "fish story" to, and convinced him that we caught these two trophy Pike on beer cans, later came back and thanked me. The newspaper totally sold out of every single issue they printed of the "Beer Can Catch."
People were sending the article to friends and relatives all across the country. I actually saw the article myself at a lumber yard in Grand Junction. You have got to hear this story!
Can you give us your best impression (a la Rich Little) of another Orion Pro
Staffer?
I don't know the staff well enough right now, but give me time...
Have you been in a precarious situation that you were in where you weren't
exactly sure of the outcome, hunting or otherwise?
This past archery Elk season, I was hunting with my son, Colton. I got up at 5:00 a.m. that morning to use the porta-potty. As I sat there in the pitch dark with no flashlight or fire, a bear walked up to within 10 feet of me. I screamed and yelled running back to the tent to grab my pistol, while pulling up my pants. My son thought I was being attacked! We later got a good laugh when I asked him, "Does a bear *!?# in the woods?" Before he gave me an answer I said, "Well, he ain't the only one!"
Do you have any sports teams that you follow religiously? And why those
teams?
No, not really. I enjoy watching sports, but I don't have any favorite teams.
At the end of the day, what's it all about?
For me, it's all about inspiring kids to be Unstoppable!
